When natural disasters hit, Indigenous communities are often among the hardest impacted—yet overlooked in mainstream relief. Many live in rural or remote regions where infrastructure is limited, slowing response time and complicating recovery.

Earth Daughters ensures that relief efforts are community-led and culturally grounded, providing urgent support while honoring traditions, governance, and local knowledge.

Rapid Response Direct, flexible support delivered quickly to families and organizers on the ground.
Culturally Grounded Relief aligned with community languages, ceremonies, and decision-making processes.
Community Leadership Funds flow through trusted leaders who understand their communities’ true needs.

hurricane eta's impact on oaxaca

Hurricane Eta, one of the most powerful storms of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, brought heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides to parts of Oaxaca, devastating rural and Indigenous communities. Many families lost homes, crops, and essential infrastructure, while remote villages faced food shortages and limited access to clean water.

Earth Daughters supported recovery efforts by providing essential supplies to eight different rural Indigenous pueblosthroughout Oaxaca, helping meet immediate needs and easing hardship during the long process of rebuilding.

oaxaca earthquake relief

On June 23, 2020, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Oaxaca, with the Ozolotepec region of the Sierra Sur particularly hard-hit. The disaster occurred in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, amplifying existing disparities faced by Indigenous communities.

  • Phase I – Led in Mexico, 3 tons of food and clothing were distributed to impacted communities.
  • Phase II – Successfully rebuilt 200 homes in five different pueblos.

Through these three phases, Earth Daughters and our partners provided immediate relief and long-term recovery, helping communities restore stability, safety, and dignity after the earthquake.
