Earth Daughters supported Manos del Mar Oaxaca in hosting cultural empowerment and language preservation workshops for 50 Ikoots children, addressing the cultural shame and language loss many Indigenous youth face under ongoing assimilation. As traditional languages and identities are increasingly threatened, initiatives like this play a critical role in reclaiming and celebrating cultural heritage.
Each child participated in a three-hour workshop designed to reconnect them with their language, identity, and community through creative and engaging activities. These sessions provided a safe and affirming space where youth could learn, express themselves, and take pride in their Ikoots heritage.
As part of the program, every participant received a holiday educational kit that included art supplies and a shirt with the message “I am Ikoots,” reinforcing a sense of identity, dignity, and belonging. These materials extended the impact of the workshops beyond a single day, encouraging continued learning, creativity, and cultural connection at home. Beyond language preservation, the initiative fostered confidence, cultural pride, and community connection among youth, helping to counteract the effects of marginalization and assimilation. By centering Indigenous voices and knowledge, the program supports the next generation in carrying forward their traditions and stories. Grounded in partnership with local leaders and community organizations, this project reflects a commitment to culturally rooted, youth-centered approaches to education and empowerment. It highlights how strengthening language and identity is essential not only for cultural survival, but for building resilient, empowered communities.
