IKOOTS TRADITIONAL FOOD BASKET INITIATIVE

Climate change has deeply impacted Indigenous communities—especially coastal Indigenous peoples—through rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and warming waters that disrupt ecosystems and traditional ways of life. For coastal communities, these environmental changes directly threaten food systems, livelihoods, and cultural practices tied to the ocean. Coupled with the COVID‑19 pandemic, these pressures increased vulnerability while also strengthening community resilience and mutual support networks.

In response, Earth Daughters partnered with the artisan collective Manos del Mar in San Mateo del Mar, an Indigenous Ikoots community, to lead the Ikoots Traditional Food Basket Initiative. Centered in Indigenous knowledge and community leadership, the initiative provided baskets of traditional foods to local families, ensuring access to culturally meaningful and nutritionally important resources.

Each basket supported not only immediate food needs, but also food sovereignty and cultural continuity, reinforcing the importance of traditional diets, local ingredients, and community-based food systems. By prioritizing Indigenous food practices, the initiative helped sustain knowledge that has been passed down through generations while addressing present-day challenges.

Funded through a community micro-grant, the project distributed baskets directly to families in San Mateo del Mar, offering targeted support to those most affected by overlapping crises. This approach emphasized local leadership, direct action, and mutual aid, ensuring that resources were distributed in ways that reflected the community’s needs and values.
Beyond immediate relief, the initiative highlights the role of Indigenous knowledge in building resilient, sustainable food systems in the face of climate change. It demonstrates how community-led solutions can protect both cultural identity and environmental balance, while strengthening collective care and long-term resilience.
