AI & INDIGENOUS PEOPLES: DEFENDING RIGHTS, SHAPING FUTURES
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our societies, yet its impacts on Indigenous Peoples remain underexamined. This campaign seeks to educate, mobilize, and spark dialogue on how AI intersects with Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and cultural integrity.
Why This Matters
AI technologies hold both promise and peril. Without safeguards, they risk reproducing systemic biases, enabling cultural appropriation, and deepening inequities. But when grounded in Indigenous leadership and values, AI can serve as a tool for empowerment—preserving languages, protecting knowledge systems, strengthening sovereignty, and bridging digital divides.
Campaign Goals
- Raise Awareness: Share stories, research, and examples of AI’s impacts on Indigenous communities.
- Defend Rights: Advocate for ethical AI governance frameworks that respect Indigenous sovereignty, data ownership, and free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC).
- Shape Futures: Highlight opportunities for AI to support Indigenous innovation, climate resilience, and intergenerational knowledge transfer.
- Spark Conversation: Create accessible platforms where Indigenous voices, technologists, policymakers, and the public engage in critical dialogue.
