Preserving Ancestral Seeds and Strengthening Maya Food Sovereignty

AWÄN is a Guatemala-based initiative dedicated to preserving ancestral seeds and strengthening Maya food sovereignty through community-led practices rooted in Indigenous science. By protecting native crops and revitalizing traditional agricultural systems, the project supports biodiversity, cultural continuity, and long-term community resilience.

At the heart of AWÄN’s work is the understanding that seeds are not just agricultural resources, but living carriers of culture, history, and identity. Through seed saving, exchange networks, and the continued practice of milpa farming—a traditional intercropping system that cultivates crops like corn, beans, and squash—communities sustain both ecological balance and cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

Grounded in Indigenous ecological knowledge, AWÄN promotes sustainable land stewardship practices that work in harmony with the environment rather than against it. These methods enhance soil health, protect native biodiversity, and strengthen local food systems in the face of increasing environmental pressures such as climate change and land degradation.

Beyond agriculture, the initiative fosters intergenerational learning and community empowerment, ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their traditions and knowledge systems. By centering Indigenous-led solutions, AWÄN challenges dominant agricultural models and highlights the importance of local, place-based approaches to food security.
This work demonstrates how Indigenous science offers holistic, resilient solutions to global challenges—supporting not only food sovereignty, but also environmental sustainability, cultural survival, and community well-being for generations to come.
